Publishing Date: 2010

The Entrepreneurial Idea: In 25 words or so, please highlight why readers should care about this Ethan Award nominee.

Known as the Achievement Mentor, Tom Terwilliger believes in everyone’s ability to soar above thier circumstances and has devoted his life to helping them do it.

Please describe the creative and entrepreneurial achievements of the Ethan Award nominee:

From the creation of new exercise and nutritional approaches as a champion body builder, to providing thought leadership for organizations like IDEA, Gold’s Gym inc, Fox Sports Net and Impossible Pictures, to the founding of Coaching Leadership Excellence Terwilliger has always been on the innovation cutting edge.

After winning the coveted National Bodybuilding Championships (Mr. America) and starting a chain of successful athletic clubs, Terwilliger spawned the idea of a TV show exploring the inspiring and healthy aspects of the sport.

He quickly confronted his greatest obstacle to success… no one of any influence at that time believed there was a large enough audience to support a show about body building.

Terwilliger knew he could reach and inspire millions if he could prove them wrong. So along with a small New York production company and a former NBC executive Terwilliger produced the pilot for what would become Muscle Sport USA and together they were able to persuade Madison Square Garden Sports Network to take a risk on his passion – for one season.

Three years later the show was picked up by Fox Sports Net, where Terwilliger as host and co-producer, continued for the next 13 years to inspire millions to live a healthy fitness lifestyle.

In his latest work 7 Rules of Achievement, Terwilliger met the challenge of revolutionizing the goal setting process in part by breaking free of the universally excepted SMART goals formula which he believes falls short of what is truly required for a psychological and emotional head start on the achievement process.

As a result he created the A.C.T.I.O.N. goals criteria which is now being used by countless achievement coaches, mentors and goal setters across the globe and is rapidly becoming the new gold standard in the goal achievement process.

What skills has the nominee used to obtain these results? Please focus your entry around particularly novel or unique approaches, spectacular innovations, and creative insights:

When Tom made the early decision and exercised the courage to walk away from his then outlaw biker lifestyle and countless old disempowering beliefs to pursue something more it also fertilized another decision – to let nothing stand between him and what might be possible.

He realized early on that it would be his own limiting beliefs that would be his greatest obstacle and so he made the choice to focus on and move towards a future filled with possibilities rather than running away from a troubling past filled with doubts, fears, and insecurities.

The strength of that choice created the impetus to overcome the insurmountable obstacles he faced when pursuing an elusive and challenging athletic career, starting a chain of highly successful NY athletic clubs, and facing rejection after rejection form countless TV networks in the creation of a successful TV show.

It was however his later studies of what the mind, including the emotional mind, required to start and keep moving towards a pre-determined objective without being sidelined by overwhelming internal opposition that revealed the six critical components of the A.C.T.I.O.N. goals criteria. The acronym A.C.T.I.O.N. stands for Accessible, Clearly Stated and Concise, Towards and Timed, Impassioned, Organic, and As if now.

Although all six components are critical in the achievement process it is the “Organic” piece that not only separates ACTION goals from SMART goals and every other goal setting process but is also the one factor that when overlooked can all but guarantee failure.

Terwilliger recognized that if a goal, no matter how well formed was not in-line with the goal setter’s highest values and a manifestation of his or her own natural and organic internal drivers would produce nothing more than internal conflict, massive resistance and zero results.

What does the nominee have in store for the next 5 years? How will it shape the nominee’s industry, the world of business or our culture at large? Please focus this answer around the nominee’s vision for the future and his/her specific plans for achieving these goals:

Tom’s desire to help others achieve the energy, health, joy, happiness and abundance they deserve in their life has been his driving motivation for the past 20 plus years and will continue as his mission for as long as he has the strength and ability to share it.

As part of that mission, Tom has already begun the process of reaching thousands of people with his one of a kind live Achievement Bootcamp and tens of thousands more with his extraordinary Experience The LEAP coaching process and live events.

In 2011, Tom will be launching The LEAP coaching process as a certification training for other motivated and impassioned coaches.

Also as part of that mission Tom has already begun work on his second book, The Inner Game of CONFIDENCE which like 7 RULES of Achievement he believes will have a profound impact on the lives of its readers by helping them step out from the limits of thier comfort zone and into a world of infinite possibility.

One of Tom’s driving passions revolves around the 2011 launch of the Self Powered Tour which will reach 100,000 high school students with a powerful and life transforming message of CHOICE.

Tom believes by sharing his experience as a professional athlete and how the use of anabolic steroids and other performance and appearance enhancing drugs can ultimately lower self esteem, decrease athletic ability, and limit truly empowering choices will profoundly impact and help transform the lives of thousands of young future leaders.

At age 51, Tom understands now more than ever that the legacy of his work will ultimately be measured by the impact it has on the future and that the future will be determined by today’s young leaders.

Great book that breaks down your goals so that they are concise and manageable. Manageable is the key factor here for me, as there is often a lot I want to accomplish, but it can get overwhelming. I have my action steps in place and on my way.

I have known Tom for over 20 years, and not once has he waivered in his “walk his walk, and talk his talk.” He is a truly genuine person whose only mission that I have ever known of him is to help anyone hat he meets. Not only would you benefit by reading his book, but I highly recommend you friend him on facebook as he always has something positive to say and something to make you think about that would make your life better. I am proud to know him, and just the fact that he is nominated is exceptional, but, by God, there will be voting to see that Tom will get what he deserves, this honor. The best man is right here, and he is already a winner.

Great book, clear and concise. I loved that Tom didn’t take up a lot of my time with a relentless stream of case studies and metaphoric stories but rather convinced me with his own authenticity. The Rules are the rules and I now know that breaking them has not served me nearly as well as I would have thought. Tom’s book is a must read.
